Edward Markward, Music Director

Welcome all who are in pursuit of the
enjoyment of great choral masterpieces. There is no other medium which
raises the human spirit in such an intimate and personal way, yet has such
far-reaching effects on those who perform as well as listen. I am speaking
of the combined sounds of the symphony orchestra with the all-encompassing
glow of human voices, offering the joy that only the human spirit
committed to excellence and sharing can provide. Whether through
traditional sacred masterpieces such as Handel’s Messiah or Bach’s
Mass in B Minor, twentieth-century works such Stravinsky’s
Symphony of Psalms or Arvo Pärt’s mystical Miserere, or those
wonderfully joyful secular works such as Orff’s Carmina Burana or
Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, the Rhode Island Civic Chorale and
Orchestra seeks to provide its members and audiences profound musical,
emotional, and spiritually moving experiences. Our members are committed
to that pursuit of excellence and have found - as only choristers can,
with their offering of minds, bodies, souls, and voices - the personal
rewards to be as great as the musical ones.I invite any and all who share in our enthusiasm for
great choral music to become part of the Rhode Island Civic Chorale and
Orchestra experience. I promise you the best music, hard work,
camaraderie, enthusiasm, a commitment to excellence, and rewards which
greatly surpass things material. We offer the opportunity to share your
talent and enthusiasm with other like-minded individuals as well as
appreciative and knowledgeable audiences.
